Your Grab-A-Cask was filled with fresh beer at Laxton Hollow’s brewery. This is cask-conditioned beer that still contains a small amount of yeast – it is a live product, similar to what you would get on tap at the pub. This means that the Grab-A-Cask has a shorter shelf life than most canned or bottled beer, but holds carbonation better and lasts much longer than growlers.
It is always a good idea to keep your Grab-A-Cask in a cool place to maintain freshness. Try to allow 24 hours for the beer to settle after you get it home (or its final destination) before opening. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO FREEZE.
Your 1.32 gallon Grab-A-Cask contains around 10 pints of beer. It should be good for at least four weeks after purchase. Once opened, it should keep for three days.
How to Open and Handle Your Cask
1. Break the seal on the bottom red tab by gently prying it outward from the top. With your finger in the tab, slowly pull the tap out from the base until it is fully extended. Place the cask at the edge of a counter or table and SLOWLY turn the tap counter-clockwise to pour a couple ounces of beer out into a glass and then discard. Keep in mind the beer is under pressure as you do this.
2. Ventilate the mini cask by lifting the top tab and turning it from the “0” to “1” position, also counter-clockwise. This is best done in a sink. Have a towel handy as a small portion of beer may escape from the top vent. Once the cask has settled, allow the beer inside your Grab-A-Cask to rest in a cool or cold place with the top vent open for 24 hours without moving.
3. To serve, move the cask to a flat surface while being careful not to disturb its contents, or simply leave it in position on your refrigerator shelf. Turn the tap counter-clockwise to pour, clockwise to close. DO NOT push the tap back in! There may be some sediment in the tap when first opened. Discard the first few ounces if it is too cloudy for your tastes.
4. Once ventilated and opened, enjoy your mini cask within three (3) days. Take care not to spoil your pints by disturbing any of the natural yeast sediment may have settled to the bottom of your Grab-A-Cask while in service.
5. Close the vent at the top when not in use by turning it clockwise to the “0” position. Remember to reopen the vent before serving again.
